A new definition of user-friendliness with the LG G7 ThinQ

The latest smartphone releases among leading manufacturers reveal that innovation is becoming much slower with each new year, which has raised the question of whether the age of the smartphone revolution is over.

Practically all flagship smartphones today look similar in terms of screen size, shape and icon layout among other features. This has seen more customers opting for price as a major determinant in selecting new phones.

However, while critics argue that the smartphone revolution is over, leading smartphone giants like LG Electronics maintain that the revolution and competitive edge is more in how intuitive and adaptable a smartphone is compared to how it looks.

Moses Marji, LG Electronics General Manager Marketing, says that the real competition now lies in how companies are able to integrate Artificial Intelligence to attain seamless operation and simplify the lives of users.

“The continued growth of AI represents the next frontier for smart technology and we can expect to see some of the most exciting AI innovation take shape around smartphones. LG is leading the way by offering physical AI access on the LG G7 ThinQ with a dedicated Google Assistant button,” he argues.

A single tap of the G7 ThinQ Google Assistant button launches the program while two quick taps starts Google Lens. This feature reduces the hassle of customizing settings, allowing the user to just focus on what’s in the frame, not on the settings.

Mr Marji adds: “Users can also hold down the button and begin talking to the Google Assistant.”

This new innovation in AI also shows that the death of physical buttons is far from over, even as smartphone user interfaces become almost entirely touch based.

LG’s physical AI access contributes to  the case for function over form. It remains true that even while smartphones manufacturers compete for bezel-less and infinity screens, consumer-oriented design will always win as the most compelling option.
