Climate change is arguably one of the
biggest global challenges of the recent time with its effects in the Kenya
alone ranging from low agricultural productivity, increased natural disasters,
heightened spread of vector borne diseases to rapidly eroding coastal zones.
Whereas climate change affects everyone,
the impact is never equal as women and girls get affected more than men get.
This is mainly because of the patriarchal culture and traditions of the various
communities within the country, for instance, inequitable distribution of roles
and resources.
Many women around the country have had to
adapt to the changing climatic conditions that have greatly impacted on their
economic development as well as posing extreme health risks.
In countries around the world and
especially Kenya, many women are swamped with parental responsibilities within
their families together with the pressure for career and educational growth.
The bare truth is that most women are still
engaged in traditional roles of housekeeping while men tend to focus more on
economic and financial empowerment. In times of drought as witnessed in most
parts of the country, most women in those areas have to walk long distances in
search of water and firewood to enable them provide the family with a meal to
the very least, once in a day.
The persistence of such changes also sees
many girls dropping out of school in a bid to help their mothers with the house
chores. This in the long run leads to a continuous cycle of inequality.
In the words of former US president,
Barrack Obama, “climate change is no longer some far-off problem, it’s
happening here, it’s happening now,” and it requires a concerted effort from each
and every one to see to it that we save the world for us and our future
generations.
LG has for a long time remained steadfast
in developing unique and energy efficient products that not only provide its
customers with top-notch performance but also save energy and protect the
environment.
LG Electronics Marketing Manager East
Africa, Moses Marji asserts that
the company has discovered that each step they take to reduce environmental
impact helps strengthen their environmental credentials.
“We have
evidence that sustainability pays off. Companies that manage their
environmental and social performance have superior financial performance and
actually create more value for their shareholders,” adds Mr. Marji.
LG offers a wide range of energy star
qualified products that include refrigerators, television sets, room air
conditioners, dishwashers, LED lighting and washing machines. These products
are not only efficient in reducing impacts on the environment, but also go a
long way in cutting the costs of bills we pay in our homes.
For instance, LG’s Ecohybrid dryer in its
washing machines recycles heat to save up to 53 percent of energy compared to
the normal dryers. Such shows the company’s commitment towards environmental
protection.
It is high time we connected the dots
between climate change, energy shortages, food security and more so women’s
empowerment, lest we continue the cycle of gender inequality in our country.
