A common belief in Kenya is that the refrigerator is like a magic box that will keep any food you put inside it fresh forever. The fridge is seen as synonymous to health and convenience without ever having to worry about whether it will keep your food safe and healthy.
However, the truth is more complicated than that, and many people have contracted food borne diseases after eating food they assumed was fresh since it had been refrigerated past its expiry date.
Different foods have different shelf lives. The same principle applies to the “refrigeration life” of food. Some foodstuff may take weeks before they go bad if well refrigerated. However, some, like milk, can only last a few days longer under refrigeration.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances, causes more than 200 diseases – ranging from diarrhoea to cancers.
An estimated 600 million – almost 1 in 10 people in the world – fall ill after eating contaminated food and 420 000 die every year, resulting in the loss of 33 million healthy life years. A significant percentage of this contamination happens naturally after the food has stayed past its expiry date.
This raises the question of whether kitchen appliance manufacturers have the responsibility of breaking some of these common myths about the value of refrigeration.
Following intensive consumer-oriented research, LG Electronics came up with a refrigerator that not only keeps your food fresh within the allowable limit beyond the expiry date, the appliance is also programmable to warn you when your food is about to go bad.
“LG’s collection of high-end Door-in-Door refrigerators set the gold standard for food preservation. In addition to their innovative and ergonomic designs, these refrigerators use insights gleaned from decades of research to lock in cold air and prevent food from degrading,” says Moses Marji, LG Electronics General Manager Marketing.
Equipped with special temperature controlled cabinets, Door-in-Door refrigerators can keep fruits and vegetables in a pristine state while also prolonging the lifespan of leftovers stored inside.
Furthermore, the ThinQ version of the InstaView refrigerator gives you the option to key in the expiry dates of different products in the appliance. This allows you to keep track of when the expiry date is approaching and also determine how much longer it would still be safe to keep the food in the refrigerator.
The newer ergonomically-friendly Instaview Door-in-Door models offer improved smart functionality that simplifies everything from shopping to preparation. This makes food preservation stress-free by removing that additional worry of whether the food you just discovered at the back of the fridge is safe to eat.
